Gravitas Publications Hits the Road for Home School Conferences

Dr. Keller will be speaking at three conferences in 2010

Gravitas Publications, a small, independent publisher of science texts for children, confirms an ambitious schedule for home school conferences this Spring. A USA Today article in January, 2009, noted more than 1.5 million kids were home schooled in 2007, an increase of 36% over 2003 numbers.

“We believe there is a growing demand for non-traditional educational materials,” said Rebecca W. Keller, Ph.D., author and publisher. “Real Science-4-Kids promotes critical thinking in children as young as kindergarten.” Keller explains teaching science in context with kids’ real-world experiences and an interdisciplinary approach helps parents reach a goal of truly engaging their children in learning. “Teaching children how to use open inquiry and the logic of the scientific method at an early age also gives them an advantage in learning other subjects,” she commented.

In response to interdisciplinary requests, Keller developed Kogs-4-Kids, a six-workbook set for Chemistry Level I that helps students understand connections between the scientific discipline they are studying and other disciplines such as critical thinking, language, technology, the arts, philosophy, and history. Biology, physics, and earth/space Kog sets are in development.
Kogs-4-Kids plus Real Science-4-Kids work together to create not only a foundation for scientific knowledge but also a framework for scientific literacy. Keller addresses this topic with a presentation entitled, “Reinventing the Renaissance: Teaching Science in Context.”

Keller has confirmed speaking engagements at the following three conferences:
• MassHope, DCU Center, Worcester, MA, April 23-24, 2010
• LEAH, Long Island, April 30-May 1, 2010

About Gravitas Publications:

Rebecca W. Keller, Ph.D., a former research assistant professor at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, worked in molecular biology, chemistry and neuroscience at the University of New Mexico before making the decision to become a home-school mom. After searching for a science curriculum that taught solid science concepts in a manner understandable for youngsters, she developed a series of textbooks, lab workbooks and teacher manuals called Real Science-4-Kids. In 2008, Gravitas introduced Kogs-4-Kids™ interdisciplinary supplemental materials to provide a framework – or context – for science so the student sees how science is a part of everyday life. Kogs connect the core subjects to each other and to mathematics to build a solid foundation to strengthen learning experiences for children. For more information, see www.gravitaspublications.com.
